Gov. Scott Honors Borinqueneer Veterans with Governor’s Veterans Service Award
ORLANDO, Fla. – Today, Governor Rick Scott was joined by Adjutant General of Florida National Guard Major General Emmett R. Titshaw, Jr. at the Kissimmee Civic Center to award the 65th Army Infantry Regiment “Borinqueneers” with the Governor’s Veterans Service Award for their service to Florida and the nation. The Borinqueneers were the first body of native troops in Puerto Rico and the only Hispanic-segregated unit in the United States Armed Forces that played a prominent role in American military history.
Governor Rick Scott said, “I am honored to present the heroic members of the 65th Army Infantry Regiment ‘Borinqueneers’ with the Governor’s Veterans Service Award for their service and dedication to Florida and our country. Their service in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War demonstrated tremendous courage, resilience and triumph during combat.
“Our veterans have made countless sacrifices for Florida families and it is important that we take the time to honor and thank them for their courage and their service. Florida is the most military-friendly state in the nation, and this medal will serve as a testament of our thanks from all Floridians.”
Representative David Santiago said, “The Borinqueneers are a strong and brave group of men who have protected our state and nation. I am very proud to be able to recognize the Borinqueneers and their service to our country. I also want to thank Governor Scott for honoring our veterans.
The “Borinqueneers” were the only all-Hispanic unit to serve in the Korean War conflict. During the Korean War, they earned four Distinguished Service Crosses, 124 Silver Stars, nine Korean battle campaign awards, the Presidential and Meritorious Unit Commendations, two Korean Presidential Unit Citations, and the Greek Gold Medal for Bravery. They are also credited with launching the last recorded battalion-sized bayonet assault in United States Army history.
Governor’s Veterans Service Award
The “Governor’s Veterans Service Award” honors Floridians who have served in the U.S. Military. The front of the medal depicts the Great Seal of the State of Florida. The back of the medal displays the five seals representing the five branches of U.S. Military with an inscription that reads “Honoring Those Who Served.”
