GIVE USEAlexis Fairchild and Sidney Good are fighting to recover from severe injuries they received para sailing in Florida.
Alexis Fairchild and Sidney Good were para sailing in Florida. The line was disconnected from the boat due to strong winds. They were sent directly into a condo building. Both are currently in critical condition and are receiving continuous care. We understand that medical bills are expensive. We want to show the families that they are not alone. They have many ready to show their support for the cause. We want to see our friends come home and return to their lives as soon as they can. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Every cent can make huge difference. We want to show them how much we care and how much we need them in our lives.
Though the girls are still considered to be in critical condition, it’s always good to hear progress, no matter what form. Many of you have heard, I’m sure, that Alexis was walking yesterday! It wasn’t by herself, but the fact that she was willing is amazing! We are very happy to hear such great news at home.
As always, we’re very thankful for you support! We are very fortunate to have received all of these blessings and donations and cannot fully explain to all of you how thankful we are. I will do my best to continue to keep you all updated as I receive information!
Here’s a quick reminder of all the events that will be going on locally. If you have any ideas or suggestions, do not hesitate to contact me!
-Donation cans have been distributed to businesses throughout Huntington and Warren soon.
-Shirts, bracelets, and yard signs will be available for purchase hopefully by the start of this upcoming week.
-A walk-a thon(possibly run/walk 5k) is in the planning stages at the Huntington North High
School.
-K105 will be at the Warren festival, (July 4-7th) on the 5th with Taylor Wilburn, Brooke

Rethlake and possibly myself doing interviews.
-Fundraisers at Pizza Hut of Huntington and East of Chicago of warren are also currently in the planning stages.
- A fundraiser at the Zestos of Huntington is also currently in the planning stage as well.
Please remember to keep the girls and their families in your thoughts and prayers, and if you  still can, spread the word and donate! Every cent counts!

By CHRIS OLWELL | The News Herald   Published: Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 22:10 PM.

PANAMA CITY BEACH — A proposed law that failed to pass during the most recent legislative session might have prevented an incident Monday that left two Indiana teens in critical condition.
At least six people have died and dozens of others have been injured in Florida as a result of parasailing crashes, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

July 8, 2013  The Panama City Police Department is investigating a shooting incident that occurred on July 7, 2013, at approximately 10:45 pm at the Courtyard Marriott located at 905 E. 23rd Place in Panama City. A 57 year old male victim and a 44 year old female victim were shot multiple times outside the hotel. The male was pronounced deceased at the scene and the female victim was transported to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries. Witnesses who heard the shots called police and located both of the victims. Initial information was learned that a male suspect fled the area on foot and then got into a newer model maroon Dodge Charger.
Further information was learned that this was not a random act and the victims were targeted by the suspect. A suspect was quickly identified through evidence that was collected in the investigation and assistance was requested from the United States Marshals Florida Regional Task Force to help locate and apprehend the suspect. The task force is comprised of U.S. Marshals and members the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Panama City Police Department, and Bay County Sheriff’s Office. Members of the task force along with the Florida Highway Patrol apprehended the suspect during a traffic stop along Interstate 10 in Leon County on July 8, 2013, at approximately 1:00 am. Shots were exchanged during the apprehension and the suspect was injured. The United States Marshals Office along with other law enforcement agencies are investigating the shooting incident where the suspect was apprehended.
Based on the investigation, evidence collected, and information learned, there are no other suspects at large. This incident remains under investigation and further details cannot be released at this time. The identity of both victims will be released after the notification of next of kin. The identity of the suspect will not be released at this time pending further investigation. First Read from NBC News First Thoughts: Hands on a hard situation

Monday, 08 July 2013 06:10:38 PDT

Expect the White House to take a more hands-on approach to the unrest in Egypt… Dueling ad campaigns in the fight to define health care’s implementation… The immigration debate returns… Obama to deliver a statement at 11:50 am ET about his administration’s management agenda… The Year of Redemption continues with Eliot Spitzer’s run for NYC comptroller… Is Spitzer’s entry Weiner’s worst nightmare?… Perry to announce his political plans today in San Antonio… And Enzi vs. Liz Cheney?

By Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, Domenico Montanaro, and Brooke Brower

*** Hands on a hard situation: As the news out of Egypt gets worse — 42 were killed and 322 were injured after the Egyptian military fired on Muslim Brotherhood supporters — one thing is certain: Expect the Obama administration will take a more hands-on approach to dealing with the political unrest there. This includes creating incentives for Egypt to get this right this time, getting Morsi released from his house arrest, having a more inclusive government, and propping up governing institutions. The White House realizes that if you can’t get a country like Egypt right, then it seems impossible to get stability in more problematic Middle East countries such as Syria. If there was a regret from the last round of Egyptian unrest, it was the decision to stay more hands off during the transition to democracy. As involved as the president was in helping escort Mubarak out of office, there was a hesitancy — understandable to many — of being very involved with the new government. After all, American involvement is a double-edged sword in these countries; no one can be successful in Egypt if they are seen as an American puppet. But at the same time, the Obama administration now realizes it needs to use its influence more than it did the last time. And make no mistake, the U.S. does have influence here; it’s just not clear how to use it. But it all starts with getting Morsi released.

Members of the Muslim Brotherhood carry an injured supporter of ousted Egyptian President Morsi during clashes with Republican guards forces in Cairo, Egypt, 08 July 2013.

*** The fight to define health care’s  implementation: After the Supreme Court upheld the health-care law and after Obama won re-election, the White House assumed — as did most everyone else — that it wouldn’t have to fight again over the law’s legitimacy. Well, so much for that assumption. As Republicans fight implementation of the law and as the Koch Brothers’ Americans for Prosperity is planning to air TV ads attacking the law, Obama’s Organizing for Action is up with its second TV advertisement touting its benefits. “My daughter Zoe had her first open-heart surgery when she was only 15 hours old,” a mother says to the camera in the ad. “Before Obamacare, insurance companies could put lifetime caps on your health insurance… Zoe was halfway to her cap before her first birthday… Thanks to Obamacare, we can now afford the health care that Zoe needs. And for her, that’s a lifesaver.” One of the challenges that Team Obama confronts in this implementation battle is that chaos and setbacks (like last week’s employer-mandate delay) always get more attention than improvement and success does (like what’s happening in California and with declining health-care costs).  Also note how this OFA ad targets young mothers; ditto the Americans for Prosperity campaign which will air on shows like “Chopped” and “Law & Order: SVU.” This is the real battle for implementation: Convincing mothers — and thus their grown children — to get insurance. Both sides realize mothers are the most crucial group here to make or break the health-care law.

*** The immigration debate returns: Health care, of course, isn’t the only policy fight taking place in Washington. With Congress back this week after its July 4 recess, the immigration debate returns. On Wednesday, House Speaker John Boehner huddles with his Republican conference to discuss how they proceed after the Senate passed its bipartisan immigration bill. And also on Wednesday, George W. Bush will deliver a speech on immigration from his presidential library in Dallas. (In an interview with ABC, the former president said immigration reform was important to pass.) This immigration fight right now is a battle over the heart and soul of the GOP. Is it a party that’s willing to compromise to solve a public-policy problem? Or is it simply opposed to reform because Obama is for it? What does Boehner do? And does Paul Ryan become the Marco Rubio in the House? As for the Obama White House’s role, the Washington Post says the president will get more involved. Obama “is devising a new, more public strategy that will include events in states with large Latino populations, advisers say — part of an aggressive effort to pressure House Republicans who remain skeptical of proposed changes. The White House intends to rally GOP constituencies friendly to the cause, as well, including business and evangelical groups.”

*** Manager-in-chief: The White House just added these two events to Obama’s public schedule today — a 10:30 am ET meeting with his cabinet and an 11:50 am statement on the president’s management agenda. Per the White House, Obama will meet with his cabinet “to lay out his vision for smarter government during his second term.  One of the president’s first priorities after taking office was to bring a government built for the 20th century into the 21st century… [T]he president will direct his cabinet and key members of his administration to build on the progress made over the first term, and challenge them to go even further.”

*** The Year of Redemption continues: Redemption has been a common theme in American politics. After all, every elected modern president going back to LBJ had once lost a political race. And even the most successful of politicians have experienced plenty of ups and downs. But what we’ve witnessed this year is something else. After Mark Sanford won a congressional contest in South Carolina and as Anthony Weiner is running neck and the neck in the polls for New York mayor, former disgraced New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer is now running for New York City comptroller. “I’m hopeful there will be forgiveness, I am asking for it,” Spitzer told the New York Times. (What’s next, John Edwards running for attorney general in North Carolina?) Yet at time when the public’s view of politicians couldn’t be any worse, these runs for redemption only seem to demean political office. Yes, Americans have short memories. And, yes, having high name recognition is pure gold in campaigns. But disgraced politicians using political campaigns as therapy for past sins — whether it’s prostitution or lewd tweets or an affair on the taxpayers’ dime — is a disservice to those who haven’t done those things. Today is a bad day for every honest elected official in the country as their profession is dragged through the mud yet again. But it isn’t a bad day for the tabloid headline writers. Here’s the New York Post’s cover: “Here We Ho Again.”

*** Weiner’s worst nightmare? By the way, Spitzer’s entry into the race for New York comptroller is Weiner’s worst nightmare. Why? Because just as it seemed that the story about Weiner’s past has moved on, plenty of New York voters will be reminded about it with the Spitzer news. And as others have pointed out, Spitzer is running for a lesser office (from New York governor to comptroller), while Weiner is running for a promotion (from congressman to mayor of the nation’s most high-profile city). Per a campaign schedule, Spitzer will conduct several interviews and collect signatures to be ballot while stumping in Union Square at noon ET.

*** Perry to announce his political plans: Speaking of possible political redemption… As NBC’s Carrie Dann reported last week, Texas Gov. Rick Perry is expected to announce his future political plans at an event today in San Antonio with some of his closest friends and confidantes. The smart money is on Perry saying that he WON’T run for re-election as governor next year. Per the Texas Tribune, heir apparent Greg Abbott, the state’s attorney general, has planned a meet-and-greet in Austin on July 18, and Abbot has amassed the largest campaign war chest in the state. Then again, Perry — the longest-serving governor in Texas history — has surprised folks before. In 2010, it was widely expected he’d step aside to make way for Kay Bailey Hutchison. But he ended up running and crushed KBH in the primary. So anything could happen…

*** The Lone Star battle continues: Meanwhile, Perry said on “Fox News Sunday” yesterday that the anti-abortion legislation — which had been filibustered by state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-TX) — would pass in the new special legislative session, as it’s expected to do. “This is going to pass,” he said. “I’m pretty good at counting votes.” (In that same interview, Perry declined to comment on his political future.) And tonight in Texas, anti-abortion groups are holding a rally at the state Capitol in support of the legislation.

*** Enzi vs. Cheney? Lastly, the New York Times’ Martin writes about what COULD be the biggest Republican primary of 2014: Mike Enzi vs. Liz Cheney — if Cheney mounts a primary challenge against the incumbent senator. “Ms. Cheney, 46, is showing up everywhere in the state, from chicken dinners to cattle growers’ meetings, sometimes with her parents in tow. She has made it clear that she wants to run for the Senate seat now held by Michael B. Enzi, a soft-spoken Republican and onetime fly-fishing partner of her father. But Ms. Cheney’s move threatens to start a civil war within the state’s Republican establishment, despite the reverence many hold for her family. Mr. Enzi, 69, says he is not ready to retire, and many Republicans say he has done nothing to deserve being turned out. It would bring about ‘the destruction of the Republican Party of Wyoming if she decides to run and he runs, too,’ Alan K. Simpson, a former Republican senator from the state, said in an interview last week. ‘It’s a disaster — a divisive, ugly situation — and all it does is open the door for the Democrats for 20 years.’” If there was one unmistakable message in this piece: Wyoming Republicans were warning Liz — be careful of picking a fight you might not win.

Obama agenda: Management
Monday, 08 July 2013 06:07:23 PDT

White House release: “In the morning, the President will hold a meeting with his Cabinet and senior officials to lay out his vision for smarter government during his second term.  Following this meeting, the President will make a statement on his Management Agenda in the State Dining Room.”

The New York Times: “Though many of its rules will not take effect for months, President Obama’s health care law is already the subject of an aggressive advertising campaign by Republicans to sow doubts about how it will work. In one of the largest campaigns of its kind, Americans for Prosperity, a conservative advocacy group financed in part by Charles and David Koch, will begin running television commercials this week asserting that the law will limit Americans’ health care choices. The group is spending more than $1 million on the campaign, which will initially include television advertising in Ohio and Virginia, along with online ads asking people to test their ‘Obamacare risk factors.’” Here’s the AFP ad.

Sam Stein: “Organizing for Action, the nonprofit advocacy group closely tied to the Obama White House, released a new television ad on Monday morning touting the benefits of the Affordable Care Act. … An OFA official told The Huffington Post that the ad, which is part of a ‘seven-figure commitment,’ will be airing on CNN, MSNBC, Bravo and Lifetime.” Here’s the OFA ad.

First Read confirms the ad buy and placement. An OFA spokesperson said, however, it is unsure how many parts of the series of ads there will be.

On ABC’s This Week, President George W. Bush had nice things to say about President Obama on national security and immigration. On national security, Bush said: “I think the President got into the Oval Office and realized the dangers to the United States, and he’s acted in a way that he thinks is necessary to protect the country.”

On immigration, Bush said: “It looks like immigration, you know, has a chance to pass. The reason to pass immigration reform is not to bolster a Republican Party — it’s to fix a system that’s broken. … It’s very important to fix a broken system, to treat people with respect and have confidence in our capacity to assimilate people. It’s a very difficult bill to pass because there’s a lot of moving parts. The legislative process can be ugly. But it looks like they’re making some progress.”

“Secretary of State John F. Kerry is in the headlines over the Fourth of July holiday for a decidedly unwelcome reason: questions over whether he went sailing off Nantucket as Egypt descended into chaos,” the Boston Globe reports. “Turns out he did, at least for a little while — despite his spokeswoman’s initial insistence to the contrary.”

Flashback: Bush 2004 ad showing Kerry windsurfing: “John Kerry, whichever way the wind blows.”

Fox Boston: “Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wife of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and heir to a ketchup company fortune, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition Monday, a day after showing symptoms consistent with a seizure, a person in close contact with the family said.”

Congress: Back to work — and back to immigration
Monday, 08 July 2013 06:06:41 PDT

AP: “Republicans and Democrats will put good will to the test when Congress returns this week to potentially incendiary fights over nominations, unresolved disputes over student loans and the farm bill, and the uncertainty of whether lawmakers have the political will to rewrite the nation’s immigration laws. The cooperation evident in the Senate last month with passage of a bipartisan immigration bill could be wiped out immediately if Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., frustrated with GOP delaying tactics on judges and nominations, tries to change the Senate rules by scrapping the current three-fifths majority for a simple majority. Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has indicated it’s a decision Reid could regret if the GOP seizes Senate control in next year’s elections.”

Jessica Taylor: “Some Republican lawmakers are increasingly facing a tough choice – support a comprehensive immigration bill and face a backlash from their own voters or oppose efforts to provide a path to citizenship for undocumented workers and contribute to larger GOP losses in the future. Republican strategists are already fretting about the long-term implications for the party if they reject a comprehensive immigration bill, but that’s a bitter pill for conservative activists to swallow, who are promising primary challenges and substantial blowback if lawmakers back reform. With fewer and fewer competitive House districts and Senate lawmakers who voted for the reform bill passed last week already facing threats of primary challenges, conservative activists are threatening to kill the effort, and it’s one reason GOP leadership and House Speaker John Boehner has been hesitant to even bring up the Senate bill for a vote.”

The American Action Network is going up today with a $100,000-plus national TV ad campaign, urging Republicans to support the Senate’s immigration reform bill and trumpeting the border surge in the legislation as the “toughest border security plan ever passed by Congress.” “Our southern border isn’t secure and it’s hurting our country,” said AAN Communications Director Dan Conston. “The conservative border surge plan is tough, enforceable, takes away discretion from the Obama Administration, and that would finally secure the border. We hope Americans call their Congressperson and tell them to support the conservative plan to secure the border.”

Off to the races: Weiner-Spitzer?
Monday, 08 July 2013 06:04:59 PDT

Stephanie Cutter declares that if Hillary Clinton runs, she’ll be the nominee: “If Secretary Clinton runs, she’ll be the nominee — the first female nominee of either party,” Cutter tells Maggie Haberman. “That breaks through the ‘old’ tagline that the Republican geniuses are cooking up because, if handled correctly, women of all ages will absolutely be inspired by that. I don’t recommend that be the totality of her message or platform, but there’s no way to hide that fact and it certainly shouldn’t be discounted. “

Beth Reinhard on how Obama has insulated Christie from criticism while the Jersey Shore still struggles to recover.

IOWA: Roll Call: “An uphill climb for Senate Republicans in Iowa may be further complicated by a convention process that local Republicans fear will nominate an unpalatable candidate for a statewide race. Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin’s retirement created a prime pickup opportunity for Republicans in Iowa, a perennial swing state. But after several top-tier Republicans declined to run, a cast of lesser-known GOP candidates announced their interest.” State precinct caucuses begin in January with a astate convention on June 14, 2014.

MASSACHUSETTS: Ed Markey may be sworn in Wednesday.

NEW YORK: The New York Daily News on Eliot Spitzer’s attempted return, running for comptroller of New York City: “Lust for Power.”

The New York Post on Spitzer: “Here we ho again!”

The Daily News: “The last time William Thompson ran for mayor, he promised to donate thousands of dollars from his campaign war chest to charity after the Daily News discovered that of his biggest longtime donors was linked to Bernie Madoff. But four years later, Thompson not only hasn’t donated the money — he’s also pocketed even more campaign contributions from the Madoff-tainted financier Seymour Zises. Zises — who was sued by victims of the Ponzi schemer for secretly investing the majority of their money with Madoff — has given more than $21,000 to Thompson’s various campaigns over the years. When The News uncovered Zises’ link to Madoff four years ago, Thompson promised to give $4,950 from his campaign coffers to charity.”

The New York Daily News: “After years of tension, Gov. Cuomo and Mayor Bloomberg are ready to settle the score mano a mano — on the water. Cuomo and Bloomberg will face off July 22 in a whitewater rafting race on Indian Lake in upstate Hamilton County as part of the governor’s push to boost tourism in the Adirondack Mountains, the Daily News has learned.”

Here’s Bill de Blasio with a mullet.

TENNESSEE: Roll Call: “Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., placed a six-figure television buy more than a year ahead of Tennessee’s primary, enlisting Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul as a guest star,” saying, “Nobody wants to say no to Lamar Alexander.” The ad focuses on Alexander’s pushing of the “Freedom to Fish Act.” “The reservation will run statewide from July 8-21 and cost about $180,000. It includes broadcast and cable reservations and $24,000 in radio advertising.” Here’s the ad.

TEXAS: USA Today: “Texas Gov. Rick Perry is scheduled to announce Monday plans for his political future, leaving open the question of whether he’ll seek an unprecedented fourth term next year or try again to seek the White House. Perry, 63, is already the longest-serving governor in Texas history and has been the Lone Star state’s chief executive since December 2000 when George W. Bush left to become president. Perry’s departure would set up the biggest political shuffle in Texas since he took office. The Republican was coy during an appearance on Fox News Sunday about his future, saying only that another presidential bid was ‘an option out there.’ He also said his attention is more focused now on a special session of the Texas Legislature, as lawmakers consider a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy that would also close most of the state’s abortion clinics.”

Dallas Morning News: “Rick Perry coy about political future as event to announce plans set for today.”

The Austin American-Statesman: “Gov. Rick Perry will unveil his political plans Monday afternoon in San Antonio, raising the curtain on what has the makings of a tumultuous 2014 election cycle. Perry did not tip his hand about his announcement in a nearly 12-minute appearance on Fox News Sunday.”

VIRGINIA: The Cuccinelli campaign was out Saturday at facilities in Southside, Va., that a company once run by Terry McAuliffe, GreenTech Automotive, looked at for production – before the company’s production moved to Mississippi.

The Martinsville Bulletin: “Virginia Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli said Democratic opponent Terry McAuliffe ‘had a personal opportunity to make a difference for the folks in Martinsville and Southside Virginia, and he turned his back.’”

The Richmond Times-Dispatch nearly labels McAuliffe “Tricky Terry”: “It is customary for political campaigns to remain on constant attack, using even the most anodyne statements by a candidate as an excuse to denounce his or her policies, character and honesty. If one candidate says he loves puppies, then the opposing team will accuse him of hating kittens. So it’s no surprise that GOP gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli has been crying foul over Democrat Terry McAuliffe’s claims about his own business record. Yet Cuccinelli has gotten some big help from a surprising source: McAuliffe himself. The Democrat has a pattern of making expansive claims that don’t hold up under scrutiny. Republicans recently have drawn attention to several of them – including McAuliffe’s claim that he used a construction company to build 6,000 homes and create more than 100,000 jobs, and that his Franklin Pellets enterprise is shipping ‘wood pellets over to Europe.’ The first two claims appear to be highly overstated, and the second appears to be false.”

Meanwhile, The Washington Post on Thursday published a timeline of Cuccinelli’s involvement with Star Scientific, a pharmaceutical and dietary supplement manufacturer, including this year: “Cuccinelli files his statement of economic interest for 2012, including his stock holdings in Star Scientific. However, he does not include his June vacation at Williams’s home, another oversight, he says. In March, Star Scientific informs investors that it had received subpoenas in January and February as part of a government securities investigation. The company’s stock begins to slide. In April, Cuccinelli announces he has asked outside counsel to handle the Star tax suit in place of the Office of the Attorney General. He maintains his office has no conflict of interest. He sells his remaining Star stock and announces he is amending his disclosure forms for 2012 and 2011 to reflect an additional $5,100 in gifts from Williams. He says the omissions were inadvertent but asks the Richmond Commonwealth Attorney to conduct an independent review of his disclosures. In May, a judge appoints a special prosecutor totake over the chef case from Cuccinelli. Outside counsel now defending the state against Star’s tax suit announce the two sides have agreed to a December trial date to settle the matter, the first movement in the case in more than 18 months.”

Politifact Virginia gives Cuccinelli a “False” for saying that McAuliffe opposes Virginia’s right-to-work laws.

First Thoughts: Welcome to the perpetual campaign

Tuesday, 09 July 2013 06:05:49 PDT

Welcome to the perpetual campaign… When does the campaigning end and the governing begin?… Senate Democrats threaten to change filibuster rules… Kristol-Lowry oppose Gang of Eight immigration bill… On Rick Perry and 2016… Scott Walker heads to Indiana… And new Quinnipiac poll shows Cory Booker lapping the Democratic field in New Jersey’s Senate contest.

By Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, Domenico Montanaro, and Brooke Brower

*** Welcome to the perpetual campaign: Here’s a thought exercise on this summer morning: Imagine that after the controversial and Medicare prescription-drug legislation was passed into law in 2003, Democrats did everything they could to thwart one of George W. Bush’s top domestic achievements. They launched Senate filibusters to block essential HHS appointees from administering the law; they warned the sports and entertainment industries from participating in any public service announcements to help seniors understand how the law works; and, after taking control of the House of Representatives in 2007, they used the power of the purse to prohibit any more federal funds from being used to implement the law. As it turns out, none of that happened. And despite Democratic warnings that the law would be a bust — we remember the 2004 Dem presidential candidates campaigning against it — the Medicare prescription-drug law has been, for the most part, a pretty big success. But that thought exercise has become a reality 10 years later as Republicans have worked to thwart/stymie/sabotage — pick your word — the implementation of President Obama’s health-care and financial-reform laws.

J. Scott Applewhite / AP

In this June 11, 2013 file photo, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Ky., left, accompanied by Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn of Texas speaks on Capitol Hill.

*** When does the campaigning end and governing begin? Recently, the top-two Senate Republicans — Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn — wrote a letter to the NFL and other major sports leagues warning them not to participate in any campaign to promote implementation of Obamacare. The Koch Brothers-backed Americans for Prosperity is in unchartered waters running TV ads to help prevent the law from being implemented, while the Obama political arm is also on the air promoting implementation. And Senate Republicans have vowed to filibuster any nominee (no matter how qualified) to run the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under the financial-reform law. Now there’s one big difference between the 2003 Medicare prescription-drug law and Obamacare: Some Democrats voted for the former, while not a single Republican supported the latter. (And just three Senate Republicans voted for the financial-reform law.) But we now have reached the stage in this era of increased polarization where EVERYTHING has become a partisan fight, even carrying out a law that has been passed and upheld by the Supreme Court. The mantra that “elections have consequences” has been thrown out the window and replaced by “everything must be a fight.” And this all raises the question: What’s the line between fighting for your ideology and ensuring that the government that pays your salaries actually works — or even attempts to work? At some point, governing has to take place, but when does that begin? We know what opponents will say in response to this: These are bad laws, and we have to do whatever it takes to stop them. But at what point does an election have a governing consequence?

*** Senate Democrats threaten to change the filibuster rules: Those are the questions that Senate Democrats are raising as they threaten to change the filibuster rules to get Obama’s appointees to head the EPA, Labor Department, and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau confirmed. “[Senate Republicans have] essentially said they are going to disable the executive branch if a minority of the Senate disagrees with or dislikes the president the people elect,” Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) told the New York Times. “It’s come into a realm where it’s just unacceptable because if the executive branch can’t function, then the nation can’t respond to the big challenges it faces.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has fired back, saying that such a move to change the filibuster rules would hurt minority rights, and Democrats will someday find themselves in the minority again. “Majorities are fleeting, but changes to the rules are not,” Mr. McConnell has said, per the Times. “And breaking the rules to change the rules would fundamentally change this Senate.”

*** The copycat rule: But if we learned one thing after the Bork judicial fight in the 1980s, it’s that political parties copycat each other. And if Republicans are trying to stop Democratic laws from being implemented or preventing executive-branch appointees from being confirmed, then you can bet that Democrats will return the favor the next time there’s a GOP president. This is a slippery slope fraught with unintended consequences. In fact, we already saw Democrats in the minority on the state level trying to thwart laws that were being passed and signed into law by Republican governors and Republican-controlled legislatures. This “any means necessary” style of politicizing legislating and governing is only helping to add to the public’s distrust and cynicism toward government — on all levels.

*** Kristol-Lowry oppose Gang of Eight immigration bill: Conservative writers Bill Kristol and Rich Lowry have penned an op-ed urging House Republicans to “kill” the bipartisan Gang of Eight immigration-reform bill that the Senate recently passed. “The bill’s first fatal deficiency is that it doesn’t solve the illegal-immigration problem. The enforcement provisions are riddled with exceptions, loopholes, and waivers.” More from Kristol and Lowry: “According to the CBO analysis of the bill, it will reduce illegal immigration by as little as a third or by half at most. By one estimate, this means there will be about 7.5 million illegal immigrants here in ten years. And this is under the implausible assumption that the Obama administration would administer the law as written.” While it’s important never to overestimate the opinions from the conservative or liberal intelligentsia, this could have some sway with House Republicans sitting on the fence. Bottom line: They provide some establishment cover.  By the way, as for the substance of their criticism, particularly the part about fear of how Obama will implement the law, correct us if we’re wrong, but most of this law gets enforced under a new administration, post-2016… Tossing in the fear of how a law will get implemented seems to be simply red meat for the base.

*** Rick Perry and 2016: Now that Texas Gov. Rick Perry has announced he won’t run for re-election in 2014, the question for him now turns to 2016: Will he run for president again? On the one hand, it’s hard to imagine that someone who was outperformed by Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, and Ron Paul in 2012 would get many GOP operatives and donors excited. The “oops” remarks will live in infamy for him. But on the other hand, if Perry does run in 2016, he’d have VERY LOW expectations. And as we’ve seen in the past, Perry has been at his best when folks underestimate him (example: shellacking Kay Bailey Hutchison in the 2010 gubernatorial primary or surviving in 2006). Perry could never handle being the immediate front-runner in 2012. But could he do better as the spunky underdog? And he’s still the conservative, who uses Tea Party rhetoric, who is also considered to be more liberal on the spectrum when it comes to the issue of immigration. By the way, in case you are wondering, Perry has been VERY careful not to say much about the national debate over immigration reform. In one interview, he seemed to endorse the ideas in the Senate bill while simultaneously criticizing the government’s ability to enact what’s passed.

*** Scott Walker heads to Indiana: Here’s more 2016 watch: Tonight beginning at 6:30 pm ET, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) will be the featured speaker at an Indiana Republican Party dinner in Indianapolis.

*** Booker is lapping the NJ Dem field: Lastly, this shouldn’t surprise folks: Cory Booker is crushing his Democratic rivals, according to a new Quinnipiac poll. Booker leads the field with support from 52% of New Jersey Democratic voters, Rep. Frank Pallone gets 10%, Rep. Rush Holt gets 8%, and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver gets 3%.

Obama agenda: Frustration, bumps, and glitches
Tuesday, 09 July 2013 06:04:04 PDT

The New York Times: “Increasingly frustrated by his dealings with President Hamid Karzai, President Obama is giving serious consideration to speeding up the withdrawal of United States forces from Afghanistan and to a ‘zero option’ that would leave no American troops there after next year, according to American and European officials.”

(By the way, a Google search for Obama and frustrated returns 22.6 million results.)

Obama meets with the Congressional Black Caucus today to discuss the economy, immigration, and voting rights. Vice President Biden heads to Arizona for a memorial for the 19 firefighters killed.

Politico: “As millions of low-income adults gain access in just a few months to Medicaid coverage under Obamacare, those already in the program could be shut out of some of the key preventive services included in the law. And the new enrollees could have a hard time actually getting a doctor. Those are the findings of two Health Affairs studies published Monday” from George Washington University’s public health school.”

National Journal: “If you’ve been reading all the Obamacare stories lately, you might get the impression that the administration has just realized it will not be able to implement the massive health reform as designed. It has known for months. As far back as March, a top IT official at the Department of Health and Human Services said the department’s current ambition for the law’s new online insurance marketplaces was that they not be ‘a Third-World experience.’ Several provisions had already been abandoned in an effort to simplify the administration’s task and maximize the chances that the new systems would be ready to go live in October, when customers are supposed to start signing up for insurance.”

Sam Stein looks at the real-world impact sequestration’s having on Head Start families, including families seeing their children dropped from the federally funded early education program for lower-income families: “Sequestration was meant to hurt people just like Reynolds and Bella, Misty and April. The policy’s designers made a bet in the summer of 2011 that a deficit-reduction cleaver that decimated defense and harmed the most vulnerable would be abhorrent to Republicans and Democrats alike. They lost the bet. Sequestration went into effect on March 1, 2013, after lawmakers failed to agree on a replacement. In Washington, the conventional wisdom has sometimes held that sequestration’s harms were oversold. Dire warnings of massive job loss never came true, while government programs used budget gimmickry to keep operating. Outside the Beltway, the perception of sequestration is sharply, viscerally different. Budget cuts have resulted in fewer meals for seniors, less financial aid for scientific research, poorer natural disaster preparedness and more expensive treatments for cancer patients.”

Congress: Suspend aid to Egypt?
Tuesday, 09 July 2013 06:03:28 PDT

“While the Obama administration throws its support behind Egypt’s military, some members of Congress are looking at withholding some or all of America’s annual $1.5 billion aid package if a civilian government isn’t quickly restored,” the AP writes. “Without the administration’s support, that’s a high hurdle. But after watching the violence spiral in recent days in Cairo and elsewhere, more lawmakers are questioning whether the Egyptian military’s ouster of Mohammed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood-led government last week must be defined as a ‘coup’ and how the U.S. should leverage the only significant element of influence it has in Egypt.”

Among those calling for aid to be suspended is Democratic Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Armed Services Committee.

“The Senate is trying again on student loans,” the AP says. “Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Monday scheduled a procedural vote for Wednesday on a bill restoring the interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans to 3.4 percent for one year. Interest rates doubled to 6.8 percent last week because Congress didn’t avert a rate hike built into the law.”

Off to the races: Abortion protests in N.C., Texas
Tuesday, 09 July 2013 06:02:47 PDT

Charlie Cook says 2016 conversations at this point aren’t much more than cocktail-party fodder, but that it’s all about what Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden decide to do. “Far more immediately important (and less hypothetical) is what will happen in next year’s midterm elections. Even though those elections are just over 16 months away, we still don’t know whether Republicans will be playing defense as they were last year, when they had profound problems with minority, young, women, and self-described moderate voters. And, conversely, we don’t know if Democrats, as the party in the White House, will be on defense, as is usually the case during second terms and in so-called six-year-itch elections, halfway through a party’s second term in office. The potential for the Affordable Care Act to become radioactive again, as it was in 2009 and 2010, makes this scenario sound less theoretical and more plausible.”

The SEIU will air Spanish-language pro-immigration reform radio ads. It will target 10 House Republicans with a total buy of $200,000 — Representatives Jeff Denham (CA-10), David Valadao (CA-21), Gary Miller (CA-31), Howard McKeon (CA-25), Scott Tipton (CO-03), Mike Coffman (CO-06), Daniel Webster (FL-10), Joe Heck (NV-03), Mark Amodei (NV-02) and Randy Weber (TX-14).

The Democratic Super PAC American Bridge has launched CorrecttheRecord2016.org, a rapid-response website defending Democrats ahead of the 2016 election. From the group’s forthcoming press release: “Democratic leaders like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, and others are already being subjected to coordinated attacks from Republican figures and organizations. In May, Karl Rove’s American Crossroads released an attack ad against Secretary Clinton, politicizing the tragedy in Benghazi. In June, another Republican Super PAC, America Rising, launched a ‘Stop Hillary 2016’ campaign. And House Republican leaders are using taxpayer dollars to fund partisan witch hunts with a clear eye towards 2016. Correct the Record will employ a dedicated war room staff charged with providing rapid response to false attacks from Republicans, utilizing traditional and new media tactics to promote the truth, and disseminating its fact-based content to the media, allied progressive organizations, and directly to voters.”

What gains you access to politicians and power? Money and… cybersquatting?

IOWA: The Des Moines Register: Gov. Terry Branstad’s campaign committee on Monday announced it has hired four campaign staffers to strategize for his re-election in 2014.

NEW JERSEY: Cory Booker continues to be the overwhelming favorite in the special election to replace the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg. In a new Quinnipiac poll, he gets 52% in the Democratic primary, while Rep. Frank Pallone gets just 10% and Rush Holt grabs 8%. Booker also leads Republican frontrunner Steve Lonegan 53%-30%.

NORTH CAROLINA: “The North Carolina Senate gave its final approval Wednesday to legislation adding new restrictions for abortions in North Carolina, even as hundreds of angry protesters descended on the legislature to express their displeasure,” the AP writes. “The Senate voted 29-12 for the measure that would direct state health regulators to change abortion clinic rules so they’re similar to those for ambulatory surgery centers. More than 500 opponents of the legislation – mostly women and many wearing pink – organized quickly to gather at the Legislative Building after Senate GOP leaders late Tuesday added several abortion-related provisions to an unrelated bill and won quick approval in a committee and in an initial Senate vote.”

Reuters from Raleigh: “North Carolina’s ‘Moral Monday’ protesters, now in their tenth week, objected to a bill that could limit abortion access — the latest move to counter a conservative shift by the state’s first Republican-led government in more than a century. The rally at the state capitol in Raleigh on Monday night was one of the largest since the protests began this spring, drawing about 2,000 people, including 64 protesters who refused to leave the legislative chambers and were arrested.”

The Raleigh News & Observer: “Gov. Pat McCrory on Monday voiced reservations about the abortion bill before the legislature – just days after his administration shuttered its second abortion clinic in a three-month period for safety reasons. At a news conference to talk about his first six months in office, McCrory said the abortion question was far more complicated than partisans on either side have portrayed it, and that the bill that passed the Senate last week would require more study.”

Said McCrory: “There is a fine line between safety measures and restrictions. But those two lines should not be confused. I am very concerned about the responsibility to ensure that the health of women is protected.” The R&O observes: “But McCrory left in doubt whether he would support the bill, perhaps leaving himself room for negotiations.”

PENNSYLVANIA: MSNBC’s Michael LaRosa takes a deep dive into next year’s gubernatorial contest, noting that incumbent Gov. Tom Corbett is perhaps the nation’s most endangered sitting governor. And he looks at the crowded Democratic field — led by Rep. Allyson Schwartz and state Treasurer Rob McCord.

TEXAS: The Dallas Morning-News: “Let the Texas-size political shake-up begin. With Rick Perry stepping aside after more than a decade as governor, a host of statewide candidates can finally try to move up. And the governor freed himself to focus on another possible run for president.”

Tom DeFrank: “Rick Perry is stepping down as the longest-serving governor in Texas history to clear the decks for a 2016 presidential campaign, according to several well-placed Republican sources. They said Perry is stepping down to make sure his declining popularity among Texas Republicans won’t complicate his Oval Office ambitions. Several Texas Republican sources told National Journal that despite Perry’s insistence Monday that he hasn’t decided on another presidential race, the governor has been passing the word for months he’ll definitely run again in 2016.”

Mark Z. Barabak: “Although leaving office in January 2015 could diminish his fundraising capacity, it would also allow Perry more preparation time than he took in the lead-up to his gaffe-filled 2012 campaign, the only election loss of his more than three-decade-long political career.”

Rand Paul delivered a little chin music to Perry if he decides to run in 2016. “If Governor Perry decides to run for president, I think there would be three good reasons why he could be president: Texas is a big successful state, he’s a long term governor and… I can’t remember the other one,” he said on FOX.

The Houston Chronicle: “About 2,000 people rallied at the Capitol on Monday to speak out for and against abortion rights before lawmakers return to a special session Tuesday to work on measures to restrict the procedure.”

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call yesterday shortly after five p.m. originally in reference to a missing juvenile. The call was then changed to that of a swimmer in distress when those looking for the missing juvenile were told she had been seen swimming in Gulf waters behind the Laguna Christian Retreat at 22107 Front Beach Road. Deputies arrived to find that the missing juvenile had been found unresponsive in the water and brought to shore with the help of several bystanders and a paddleboard. Deputies took over resuscitation efforts. EMS arrived and transported the juvenile to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The identity of the drowning victim is Jade McAllister, a thirteen year old girl visiting Panama City Beach with a group from her church in Morganton, Georgia. The body was turned over to the Medical Examiner for autopsy. July 09, 2013

Bankruptcy Gone Wild

By Ron Hart     Rosemary Beach, FL

There is sad news for hormone-driven boys nationwide.  The Girls Gone Wild empire went into bankruptcy, brought down by hubris, missteps, litigation and changing technology.

It was a tragic day in America for purveyors of pornography. On the day the bankruptcy was announced, nudie bar owners across the nation ordered their strippers to fly their tassels at half mast. Anyone who watched late-night TV during the early 2000s understands the business model of Girls Gone Wild and its Hugh Hefner understudy, Joe Francis. He made millions by applying incremental thinking on how trashy mass entertainment could get.

Even as a pretty easygoing father of two college-aged daughters, I never looked forward to seeing GGW ads on TV. I’d like their videos to be shown in reverse; that way, it would have looked like the girls had learned their lesson.

The free market brought porn to the Internet — literally for free (or so my guy friends tell me). That, and legal battles of GGW’s founder, caused the company to file for Chapter 11 reorganization, claiming only $50,000 in assets and $16 million in debt.

The bankruptcy interests me more than the videos. Allegations abound that Francis bilked the company before filing. In a telephone interview with Bankruptcy Beat, which I presume is like Teen Beat without pictures, founder Joe Francis called the bankruptcy trustee, ex-FBI agent R. Todd Neilson, a “four-foot-two Mormon who points his finger and yells.”

Neilson got court permission to pay the bankruptcy attorneys up to $980 an hour; so, in an ironic twist, Francis will get a taste of being taken advantage of and screwed. I’ve witnessed bankruptcy proceedings. They are not about victims; they are all about attorneys making money. To use parlance Francis might understand, a bankruptcy proceeding is a gang bang for lawyers.

Making his troubles worse, an LA judge named Sandra Klein (who Francis said lacks a “good grasp” of the law), will rule on his case. She is a government appointee from Massachusetts who co-chaired the Women Lawyers Association of LA, so I’m comfortable she will give him a fair shake. She is only a hyphenated last name away from giving him the electric chair.

With his trademark diplomacy, Francis, who spent 11 months in prison on federal tax charges, called the panel of jurors who later convicted him of assault “retarded.” It is troubling to witness such crassness from one of our nation’s most respected smut merchants. If Dennis Rodman ever wants to step down from his post as Special Diplomatic Envoy to North Korea, Francis should replace him.

The total assets of this company are in an LA warehouse full of videos and DVRs of Girls Gone Wild: Blonde-on-Blonde Dorm Room Fantasies. This epic vignette, which I think was adapted from a Jane Austen novel, is sitting around in VHS format in 105-degree heat.

And as an indicator of just how low is the lowest common denominator in America, the business interest trying to rent the space from Girls Gone Wild is the Kardashian production company.

Competition for the ignoramus entertainment dollar in America grows ever more ferocious. It is clearly a race to the bottom to see what actually insults our collective intelligence. But the real loser is society. Those in the entertainment business find it increasingly difficult to underestimate how low the low-brow, semi-literate American consumer is willing to sink to be entertained. At this trajectory, some day we will look back at the movie Jackass as a high-end documentary.

They can imprison Joe Francis, but another one will rear his head as long as our society is willing to consume such mindless tripe. What Joe Francis did was more a reflection of us as country than of him. The soft-core porn he produced was legal. The Louvre and the Sistine Chapel have more breasts on display than anywhere in America, with the possible exception of the Clinton Library.

He satisfied men’s short attention span for visual, sexual stimulation with an unending and free source of drunken, attention-starved girls who equated success with making a raunchy video.  Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton became famous that way, so why not? As those 18-year-olds mature, fight gravity, start showering alone instead of in threesomes, and realize they do not have to trade flashing their breasts for Jell-O shooters, I hope they will regret having done Girls Gone Wild.

My biggest fear is that they won’t.
